IT IS VERY IMPORTANT AGAIN TO EMPHASIZE, THAT GOOD COMMAND OF ENGLISH IS ESSENTIAL TO FILL ANY ON BARD POSITION !

Cruise companies’s requirements/expectations are always changing. Currently the most important requirements are: language skill, motivation, personality. These are the “most wanted” elements companies are seeking for in candidates. There are others also, who are still  looking at the experience as a first priority.

Salary methods:

  • Tipping positions:  in these positions (assistant waiters, waiters, barservers, bartenders, cabintewards/esses) employees generally get a minimun salary of 50-70$/month, than they get the “suggested tip” from the passangers. It means that crewmember’s  responsibility to deliver the service, than the guests will give You the money according to the cruiselines’s tipping guidelines. It is a very well working system.
  • Comission based positions: in these positions (shop attendant, photographer, spa positions) crewmembers either get a minimum of basic salary or do not get any basic wage, what they get is a comission after their sales or service provided.
  • Positions with fix salaries: in low positions (utilities, cleaners, helpers, basic cook positions), administrative positions (pursers), in certain entertainment positions ( youth staff, cruise staff) and  technical positions (light technicians, audio technicians, videographers) and management positions crewmembers get fix salaries.

Please note, that employees working in tipping positions might make more (much more) income, than in “fix salary” positions.

The working schedule is always 7 days/week, 10-12 hours/day. It might vary from department to department, as for example pursers usually do not work that much (8-10 hours) . It means there is no days off (whole day) while on board, only shift offs. Employees on board mostly working in split shifts.
There is only one department working with differenet work schedule, that is the spa department (Steiner). They are working 5 and 1/2 days per a week, and they get one whole day of, and a half.
